A 40-year-old Ghanaian gay man known as Justice Assan aka Sweet DD might be the luckiest soul alive as following a 4th attempt on his life by homophobes, he has reportedly received consideration to receive asylum in Canada.
Justice Assan was nearly lynched about a month ago around Michel Camp, a residential area built around a military encampment in Tema in the Greater Accra Region after he was allegedly busted attempting to have s*x with another man in the vicinity of the military camp.
Assan was lucky to escape with his life and in the aftermath of that, has reportedly gained consideration as an asylum seeker into Canada.
The attempt on Assan’s life was reportedly the 4th time he had almost been beaten by angry youth in the country.
Ghana has a notoriously tough anti-gay population with a super majority of the population being religious. All three main Ghanaian religions – Christianity, Islam and the African traditional religion – frown upon the practice of LGBT people.
Anti-gay sentiments have also gained more prominence in recent times following an effort by some members of Parliament, spearheaded by Ningo Prampram MP Sam George, to pass new legislation titled the ‘Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’ bill.
The new bill proposes far harsher measures for homos*xuality than previously existed and the discussion around the bill has stoked anti-gay sentiments, leading to a recent rise in attacks on LGBT Ghanaians.
In the face of numerous attacks and unending threats from Christians and Muslims alike, Assana reportedly applied for asylum to Canada and has been granted.
The loudmouth had previously bragged that he would make a career out of being gay in Ghana, much like Bobrisky in Nigeria – but the attacks had apparently reached a critical point hence he had to flee the country.
At the moment, Sweet DD appears to have won his freedom from the Ghanaian masses and it remains to be seen if he will ever return to the country where one can assume his detractors would be waiting to ‘teach him a lesson’.
