The househelp, John Alister, who is accused of killing his employer in Sokoban, Kumasi, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a different crime: stealing.
Alister’s sentence was postponed until today, October 6, despite the fact that he was first found guilty of two charges of theft earlier this week. His 20-year prison term will be served concurrently.
According to the prosecuting ASP Stephen Ofori, the suspect accepted a job in 2022 as a hotel receptionist at Bantama in Kumasi after seeing an advertisement.
The suspect left his job after a month, but he came back in July. Because of his prior employment arrangement with his employer, he was granted a pardon and was able to resume his job.
On August 6, 2023, the accused received her Infinix Note 8 smartphone from her employer (the complainant), who requested that he verify the phone’s settings on her behalf. But he grabbed that as an opportunity and ran off with the phone.
Using a smartphone app, he proceeded to take out GHC167,660.09 from the complainant’s ABSA Bank account, the court was informed.
Following the filing of an official police report, the accused individual was taken into custody from his Accra hiding place.
The court, chaired by Vida Achiaa Yeboah, noted the recent spate of crimes committed by several young people and labeled Alister’s case as planned. The judge also took into account the fact that the suspect’s plea resulted in his conviction.
Thus, she gave him a 20-year sentence for the first count of stealing a GHC 4,000 mobile phone and a 20-year term for the second count of stealing GHC 167,666 that he took out of the complainant’s bank account via the mobile app. Nonetheless, he will serve the two sentences simultaneously.
Alister sobbed as he asked the court for leniency immediately following the court’s decision. But the court turned it down.
On October 17, 2023, Alister is scheduled to appear again at the Asokore Mampong District Court. There, he will be charged provisionally with murder for allegedly stabbing his boss, Madam Stella Osei, to death.
