On Tuesday, November 28, there was a heated altercation between Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the minister of communications, and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
This came about following the Minister of Trade’s repeated attempts to introduce the contentious Import Restrictions Bill, which aims to give the Trade Ministry the authority to approve or prohibit the importation of a specific list of goods.
The Speaker’s order was questioned by Ursula, the MP for Ablekuma West, particularly in light of the Minority in Parliament’s objections to the Bill’s laying.
She believed that nothing before the house warranted this kind of opposition.

“I have no idea on what we are debating in this house today. There is nothing before the house so as you [Speaker of Parliament] indicated to the Minister [of Trade, KT Hammond] that we are not yet there, I was of the opinion that you would tell my colleagues on the other side that there’s nothing before us.” Ursula said.
The Speaker, not pleased with the state of affairs, reprimanded her and told her to go back to her seat. He warned her that going forward, the home would not accept such behavior.
“Minister, do you really listen to yourself when you are talking? If you were here from the very beginning before we started, why did you say no, when I asked if you were here from the beginning… This is not the Ministry of Communications, this is Parliament. Resume your seat.” Speaker of Parliament retorted.
The video has since caused a stir on social media. Some people believe the Speaker was too harsh on Ursula Owusu while others praised him for putting her in her place.
