Madison Swanson is a former athlete herself, having played hockey, basketball, volleyball and softball at Roseau.
She said it helped her to understand her husband a lot better especially the pressures coming from his job.
“It kind of helped me understand what goes into being an athlete and all the hard work you put in during the off season and during the season,” she said.
Erik Swanson and wife Madison met through mutual friends in January of 2016. He asked her for her phone number, but they went six months without connecting.
He later reached out to her and their relationship started blossoming.
“That’s when our relationship kicked off,” Erik said. “From there on out, I didn’t hesitate to come back and now I don’t think I’ll ever leave.”
Madison Swanson works as a dietitian for Sanford Health.
Speaking in an interview, Madison said they keep their relationship going through communication even if Erik is on the road.
“We had to focus on communication and even if you’re busy or because of the time change, we always set a FaceTime date just because that was our thing,” Madison said.
“It kept us sane. The only time we could talk would be the next day and I would already be at work but I would try to make it work.”

Their son, Toby, suffered serious injuries after he was hit by a car on Sunday, February 25th.
The four-year-old boy is currently in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital after being transported to the St. Petersburg, Fla., facility by medical helicopter.
“Thanks to the incredible work from Clearwater first responders, Toby is on the road to recovery and is surrounded by his family,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said in a statement. “Erik will be away from the team for a while, family comes first.
“Our love, support, and prayers are with Erik, wife Madison, Toby, and the entire Swanson family. Out of respect for Erik and his family, we’re not going to comment further.”

Erik Donald Swanson (born September 4, 1993) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB).
He made his MLB debut in 2019 with the Seattle Mariners.
Swanson attended Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He graduated in 2012. Swanson attended Wabash Valley College for one year and then Iowa Western Community College for a year, playing college baseball at both schools and winning the JUCO World Series in 2014 with Iowa Western.
